Naşterea coralului luteran este strâns legată de evenimentele social-culturale care au marcat sfârşitul Evului Mediu, fiind o consecinţă directă a Renaşterii şi a curentului umanist care s-a instaurat în Europa occidentală a acelei epoci. Acest curent a cuprins filosofia, literatura şi arta, întinzându-şi tentaculele şi în sfera religiei. Astfel, din Biserica Catolică s-au desprins mai multe formaţiuni religioase protestante, avându-i în frunte pe Martin Luther şi Jean Calvin. Ideologia protestantă s-a reflectat în mijloacele de expresie muzicală ale coralului, al cărui accesibilitate îl va impune în sânul noilor mişcări religioase, dezvoltându-se pretutindeni unde s-a ivit reforma protestantă.

The birth of the Protestant chorale is strongly linked to social and cultural events which defined the end of the Middle Ages, as a direct consequence of the Renaissance and of the humanist thinking which became one of the main features of Western Europe. This thinking had an impact on philosophy, literature and art and it also spread its tentacles towards religion. As a consequence, several Protesant religious groups, lead by Martin Luther and Jean Calvin, separated themselves from the Catholic Church. The Protestant ideology was reflected in all musical expressive means of the chorale, which, due to its accessibility spread wherever there was a Protestant reform.
