AN ANALYTICAL OVERVIEW OF THE OVERTURE OF THE DECEBAL OPERA BY TEODOR ZGUREANU

It is an interesting achievement in music composition, both from the rhythmic and harmonic standpoint, and, at the same time, remarkable through the plasticity of the themes invented in the folklore area, derived from the substance of folk music.
Its success lies in using the fundamental characteristics of the folk-type melodic structure. Here, we can identify rhythms of folk origin and a musical language with modal diatonic resonances. In this orchestral page, the dynamics create a very subtle array of nuances and accents. The author also varies other parameters: density, timbral colour, thus obtaining a complex, varied discourse.
Everything develops on the basis of timbral colors that could very well suggest the old Romanian instruments. Consequently, the Romanian alphorn is rendered by the use of the horn, the lyre (or lyra) by the harp, the caval (or the long shepherd’s pipe), by the clarinet.
The overture contains seventeen modules. The little modules making up the musical form do not impose themselves as entities, but succeed one another, for the purpose of attaining the same global effect.
