LUIGI CHERUBINI – A MAESTRO OF COUNTERPOINT

L. Cherubini was a well-known and deeply respected personality in the musical circles in France from end of the 18th
and beginning of the 19th centuries. Professor and later Rector of the Paris Conservatoire, he taught many disciples including
D.F.Auber and F.Halevi. He is the author of 35 operas and numerous religious works that revive the old masters’ mastery of
counterpoint, enriching it with innovations of the 19th century harmony. The article examines the most relevant creations by
L. Cherubini in terms of using various counterpoint techniques.
