Dezvoltarea tehnologiilor, a mass-media, schimbările radicale produse în mentalitatea oamenilor şi a modului de percepţie a realităţii în contemporaneitate, noile tendinţe în domeniul muzicii, genurile moderne pop-rock ş.a. au marcat profund teatrul liric. Opera îşi lărgeşte treptat sfera strictă a muzicii academice cu un public, în mare parte, omogen, deplasându-se în albia spectacolelor de interferenţă academic – de masă, iar datorită unor noi viziuni regizorale şi interpretative, fiind ţinta
unui public mult mai larg, unui public eterogen sub aspectul cunoştinţelor în domeniu, al preferinţelor muzicale, al vârstei şi chiar al nivelului de cultură şi al normelor etico-morale.
