„De fiecare dată când vizionezi o telenovelă, moare un documentar”, spune un personaj din comedia italiană „Tutte lo vogliono” (2015). Contextul în care face afirmaţia acest personaj scoate în evidenţă rolul educativ al documentarelor, în comparaţie cu primul gen de producţie cinematografică. Dar, mai întâi de toate, ce este un documentar? Natura specială a acestui gen de film, în general, precum şi utilizarea imaginilor fotografice şi a înregistrărilor de sunet, în particular, s-au dovedit a fi dificile de conceptualizat prin raportare la distincţia film de ficţiune/film de nonficţiune. Există şi o confuzie terminologică provocată de diferitele utilizări ale termenului „documentar” şi ale sintagmei „film de nonficţiune”. „Lato sensu”, putem atesta filme de non-ficţiune instrucţionalele, filme de promovare a unui produs, documentare istorice sau filme biografice.

The context in which this character makes the statement highlights the educational role of documentaries, compared to the first genre of film production. But first of all, what is a documentary? The special nature of this kind of film in general, as well as the use of photographic images and sound recordings in particular, have proven difficult to conceptualize by reference to the distinction fiction film/non-fiction film. There is also terminological confusion caused by different uses of the term “documentary” and the phrase “non-fiction film”. “Latosensu”, we can attest to instructional non-fiction films, product promotion films, historical documentaries or biographical films.
