The article examines the evolution of monodrama in the theatre of the Republic of Moldova, highlighting its transformation from a form derived from literary recitals into an autonomous and complex theatrical genre. Starting from the definition of monodrama as a stage form centered on a single actor and a direct relationship with the audience, the study emphasizes its role in exploring interiority, performative experimentation, and the treatment of contemporary themes. The research identifies four main stages in the development of the phenomenon: the period of actor’s recitals in the 1960s-1970s, characterized by the valorization of poetic expressiveness; the “one-actor theatre” experiments of the 1980s, which redefined scenic language and the actor’s status; the emergence of modern monodrama after the year 2000, marked by thematic diversification and openness to contemporary dramaturgy; and the recent stage, in which independent theatre plays a decisive role in innovating monodramatic forms. The analysis shows that in contemporary theatre, monodrama manifests itself in various forms–psychological, biographical, documentary, or experimental–being present both in the repertoires of institutional theatres and within the independent scene. Through the hybridization of scenic languages and an emphasis on performativity, monodrama becomes a relevant instrument of artistic and social reflection, confirming its importance in the current dynamics of the theatrical landscape in the Republic of Moldova.
