P. Hindemith – one of the most representative German composers of the twentieth-century, and also a remarkable personality of world music culture, is the author of an impressive number of concertos for various solo instruments. In his works Hindemith restored ties with the tradition of modernity, combining the Gregorian singing and the old German folk song, baroque techniques and contemporary ways of expression. Among the creations that stronglz manifest these traits is the Concerto for viola and orchestra Der Schwanendreher, considered in this article. Composed in 1935, the Concerto is a product of Hindemith’s mature neo-classical style, marked by a clearer tonality and a less dense polyphony than the music of the previous decade.
